CAPERNAUM

Standing on the exact spot Jesus would have stood while teaching and performing miracles!
It was nothing short of amazing to be in the very synagogue where Jesus taught and performed miracles, standing on the same stone floor He stood on!
Remains of the synagogue built by "the centurion"

There are many references in the New Testament concerning Capernaum - a lot happened here during the ministry of Jesus. The synagogue was built by the centurion that told Jesus, "Just say the word, and my servant will be healed." (Luke 7:1-11)

The centurion imported white stone and had beautiful Corinthian style columns made.

The stone of Galilee was basalt - a black stone. The original foundation of the synagogue was basalt.

The village was built all around the synagogue (and close to the sea).
Living quarters

The living quarters were all built connected together.
Peter's house

The remains of Peter the apostle's house were excavated. This is where Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law, who immediately got up and started serving them.

Peter's house

They had a house church in Peter's house during the church's beginnings.
I put a shekel in the fish's mouth.=)

It was in Capernaum that Jesus called Peter and his brother Andrew. It is also where Jesus had Peter catch a fish which had a coin in it's mouth which paid the tax for Peter and Jesus. (Mtt 17:24-27)

Enjoy more views of Capernaum, by the sea.
Corinthian corner columns.

A cross cut of the corners shows a heart shape.

Living quarters and the eastern hills in the background

Children carved games in the stone to play
games while parents were busy talking.

The son of James, the son of Zebedee carved this pillar.

Olive crushing stone to break the olives for pressing

A stone olive press. Baskets of broken olives were set
under the stone. The oil would pour into the vat bellow.

And everywhere, flowers, flowers, flowers!
